What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin adapted from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). Typesetters have used it since the 1500s because it looks like real text — with natural word lengths and rhythm — without distracting readers with meaning.
When not to use it
Placeholder text hides real content problems. For anything going to users, test with realistic copy as early as possible: real headlines are longer, names are messier, and translations into French can run 15–30% longer than English.
